Expiration Dates of Your Makeup and Skin Care Products

Whenever we buy an expensive makeup and skin care product we make a point to use it less frequently. The notion is that since we paid a lot for it we must not let it run out. Otherwise, we simply do not break even.

Many others, however, are not into much makeup and maintaining skin. Thus, all their products sit in cabinet for months and even years. But the problem is that not all of them have strong shelf life. In other words, cosmetics and skin care products expire, but more important than this is the fact that some of them end up babysitting bacteria. How? The answer to this is discussed below.

Liquid based products:
They are the creamy foundations, primers, mascara, lotions and moisturizers. These are most vulnerable to bacteria. According to experts, foundations, primers and skin care creams should not be kept more than 6 months. Yes, they do contain preservatives that help them fight against anything bad. Only problem is that preservatives themselves expire just like any other substances. Yet a good way to figure out whether they have gone bad is to check if the liquids inside them are separating from one another. A bad smell can also prove that they have completely expired. Mascara has a different story though. Its brush takes off the bacteria from our own eye lashes to party inside its bottle. That is why, it is recommended to change mascara after every 3 months.

Lipstick:
It has a shelf life of one year. You might be thinking that it is more open to inviting the little pricks. But the truth is that its lanolin and other oily ingredients provide it good shield from such harm, allowing it to last longer than the liquid based products.

Powdered cosmetics:
They are the eye shadows and pressed powders. Since they contain very less liquid (10% of water) they have a shelf life of 14 months. However, if just within a year they cause you to go through breakouts and itchy or teary eyes you have to assume that they are for retirement.

Perfumes:
They contain alcohol, a very strong preservative. Usually, it is seen that they last for years. Yet the experts believe that they should be thrown away after 12 months especially if you are not practicing keeping the perfumed closed with caps all the time. The notion is that alcohol has a tendency to evaporate through small openings, leaving the perfumes exposed to quick expiration.
