Should You Use ReaLemon In Your Facial Mask Recipe?

ReaLemon juice is a great convenient product from Mott’s Inc. It has helped us save ourselves from the hassle of cutting and squeezing lemons for juice.

If you take a look at the label attached to ReaLemon bottle you will notice that it says, “100 percent juice from concentrate”.  Sure it sounds very credible and because of this, many decide to use this bottle juice in facial mask recipes. It is all natural, right? But this does not mean it is really that safe for skin.

Apparently, ReaLemon contains three different preservatives:
  • Sodium benzoate,
  • Sodium metabisulfite
  • Sodium sulfite
The natural lemons do not produce them. They are actually preservatives used in keeping natural juice long lasting in commercial bottles.

So what can go wrong if you use ReaLemon in your facial mask recipe? Many things go wrong. First of all, you must know that a research done on sodium benzoate has revealed that it actually destroys good cells. Here is the evidence:

You must know that both sodium benzoate and sodium metabisulfite make their way into most skin care products. Yes, the chemists do it. But sodium metabisulfite is less dangerous that sodium benzoate. Same has been assumed for sodium sulfite. At least this is what majority of the studies concluded. But this does not make ReaLemon safe for skin care, for we cannot overlook the fact that sodium benzoate is harmful for skin cells.
